Brazil: ‘Hey, We’re Latino Too. Have Some Numbers.’

Posted by Steve Hall · Wednesday June 27, 2007

When I read that a session called Brazil:State of the Industry was going to be on “ad:tech Miami” I got very excited. I said to myself, this will be a great and rare opportunity to learn something new from our “Portuguese speaking brothers”. You know, you usually don’t hear much about how Brasil targets its market, and I was right even Mauricio Palermo from IAB Brazil started the session saying, “Brazil does not participate much in conventions…”

To my dissapointment the session - which had panelists like Marcelo Sant’lago, Director, Business Development of MidiaClick, Olavo Ferreira, Sales director of Yahoo! Brasil, Enor Paiano, Advertising Sales Director of UOL and Marco Bebiano from Google Brasil - was more about reading numbers and statistics from a Power Point presentation than anything else. I know these numbers were outstanding, don’t get me wrong, considering there are 33 million people available to be targeted, but there were few insights of how Brasilians go online, how sensitive are they to online advertising, etc. This session could have been also of Rumania or any other country. There was a lack of culture insight, passion….

But everything wasn’t that gray looking, here are some facts that may be valuable if you are interested in investing in the Brasilian market :
-Brasil has no inflation = great moment to invest
-Online users has grown 40% since 2006
-Brasilians spend an average of 21 hours per week surfing the net. More than the usual Hispanic
-MSN chat or Flickr are very popular, so there is a huge pot of Brasilians you can reach readily.

Muito obrigado.
